5th Sabah Open 2005 Dancesport Championship

According to the calendar of tourism side, this competition was on Dec 10. Luckily I called the organiser earlier to order ticket, so I found out the event was on Dec 3 at Magellan Sutera Hotel. The ticket costed RM100. It is worthy, consider it is an international event which has over 100 couples from Asia Pacific region (Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong…) participated. The ticket included a dinner and it was a full day event. I was hanging there from 1 PM until 11 PM.

Another reason – got pretty liang moi perform hot dances, so no reason to miss it. Just kidding. Actually I joined ballroom dancing many years ago, so I have the interest. Last time I didn’t have a permanent dance partner so I quit. It is tough if you keep on changing partner coz both sides need to re-learn how to interact with each other in order to dance well.

Ballroom Dancing is a very vigorous exercise. It is very very tiring. And the dancers have to maintain a smiling face during the contest. Not easy man. It is a serious sport. If I shake and twist like them, it would hurt me so bad that I have to crawl for week.

During the event, I took so many pictures that their committee suspected I was doing video recording, which is not permitted. I hope it is ok if I post 180+ of their photos online. 😛 You could see classic ballroom dances (Waltz, Tango, Quickstep, Foxtrot) as well as sexy + hot Latin dances (Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive). You also see kids, juvenile, adult and seniors on the dance floor. I like to watch Rumba. It is a very romantic and expressive dance, but not too naughty. This year they also got hip-hop dance competition, a good news to our local hip hop dancers.

Phew… it has been a long time I didn’t post that many photos. And taking their photos was so tough coz their move is fast and hard to predict. In fact, I used up more than 10 batteries coz I was there for 10 hours. The Sony Cybershot DSC-H1 is hungry for power. If the battery is slightly weak, it will refuse to take it. But these “weak” batteries got a 3/4 full bar in my old DSC-S40 camera. Sigh… it ended up more than 70% of the photos were taken by this old cam, which has weak flash and no stabilizer…

Maize Fest (Pesta Jagung), Kota Marudu (Nov 12-13)

Finally I went to Kota Marudu, my first time being there. Before I departed, I asked my friends and family what are the places of interest in Kota Marudu. All of them looked at me with blank face. Ok then.. I took a mini-bus, after 2 hours, I arrived Kota Marudu. Gee.. there was a power blackout. Luckily the electricity was back after 15 minutes.

Kota Marudu is a small town with some blocks of shop houses, and surrounded by sea of coconut trees. At first I saw nothing unique about this town. But in the evening of second day, around 6 PM, the view shocked me. I was walking to the venue of Pesta Jagung, and I saw thousands of birds all over the sky and wires, making hell lot of noise. Seem like there are more birds in this town than people. I didn’t bring my cap so I ran as quick as possible to avoid being bombard by bird sh*ts. Just check out the photos below.

There were some games in the first day of Pesta Jagung. I participated in the blowpipe competition. Using a blowpipe to hit a corn 20 feet away is easier to say than do, and it was windy that day. I got 3 darts but missed it totally. In fact, after 3 rounds by 20 participants (each with 3 chances), we hit the corn the 3rd time. I won nothing but taste the saliva of 20 other participants left on blowpipe. Goodness, I kissed 20 guys indirectly…

Guys, you should thank Smoke Head again for bringing you more photos of Sabah beauties. The Maize Beauty Fashion Queen Pageant is the highlight of Maize Fest. This is the 5th time this event is organized but probably the first time you can see these online. If you look at the photos closely, you will find that the pretty ladies were wearing “jewellery” made of corn leaves and seed.

Miss Tourism

Miss Sabah Tourism 2005

Last Tuesday I reported the semi-final of Miss Malaysia Tourism 2005 (Sabah State Selection) organised in BED (The Beach Club). There was a final on Oct 17. Somehow I felt that I was obligated to follow up the final result as well.

Though it was Monday, it could not stop the crowd from flooding in. There were 4 rounds, namely (1) Traditional costume, (2) Mini-skirt, (3) Beach wear, and (4) Evening dress. The top 3 winners will represent Sabah in Miss Malaysia Tourism competition held in Penang in Nov.

The result was not close to my expectation. But after second thought, I think the judges made the good choices. Besides a pretty face, the Miss Tourism should look like a kind and friendly person, the one that you feel comfortable to ask for road direction, and also the one that would nicely help the old people to cross the street.

The event was quite well organised. What I am a bit confused was – there were 12 finalists shortlisted in semi-final last week. How comes there were 15 finalists contested in the final? But nevermind lah, the more, the better. 🙂 Anyway, please click the picture below to view the photo gallery. I know it is hard, but please, don’t lick the monitor.

Miss Malaysia Tourism 2005 (Sabah State Selection)

Got addicted with my site? Kept on reloading the page yesterday and wonder why no new blog? 😀 Smoke Head was busy last night lah. There was a Miss Malaysia Tourism (Sabah State Selection Semi-Final) competition at BED pub (Waterfront) last night. 20 sexy ladies lined up to show their nose-bleeding figures in jean, beach and evening wear. It was so HOT that I give it a three thumbs up (don’t ask me to show my 3rd thumb ok. It is too private).

After I quit smoking, I seldom go to pub. Staying there is like smoking a dozen packs of cigarette, my shirt and hair become stink, the loud music also making my ears “yih yih yih…” until now. Anyway, for the welfare of my hungry readers, I decided to sacrifice my health.

The entrance ticket costs RM15. The subzero costs me RM25+. :’-< Hai.. so expensive... Me joble$$ lah.. The competition was started at 9:45 PM and ended around 12 AM. Quite enjoyable looking around there. Even if it was a Monday, it was still crowded. I noticed many girls were also as good-looking as the beautiful girls on the stage. Ok lah, Click Here to see 96 photos of Sabah beauties:

You should thank Smoke Head. MySabah.com is now one of the web sites that got the MOST number of Sabah pretty girls photos (any objection?). Borneo International Jewellery Fair

From the newspaper, I heard that there would be a grand launching for this jewellery fair at the Magellan Sutera Hotel today. There are exhibitors from Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Switzerland, Thailand… Personally I am not quite interested in jewellery coz wearing it will not make me look prettier. It will attract the robbers and kidnappers, more than beautiful girls. But seeing many liang moi (pretty girls) wearing expensive jewellery would be a cool photography subject, so I went there in the morning. I am quite happy with what I got below.

To share my happiness, click the individual thumbnail below to see larger photo. Click Harder, Ooohh.. yESs… (sorry if the jewellery doesn’t look clear coz I focus on something else):

Haha… I heard that many guys were so scared and left the town because of this exhibition. Those who go with their wifes or girlfriends will seek for hiding place once they walk in (If the couple doesn’t split up, I am quite sure that they are not married). Most of the time you will see a group of women look for best bargain, but their men missing in action. I do not have any wife or girlfriend, so I am safe.

I am not able to show the photos of the jewellery coz I can’t. When I point the camera to their jewellery, most exhibitors, especially those from overseas, will be so nervous that as if my camera will suck away their diamond. “Are you from the press?” “No, I am not.” “No, you cannot take picture…” They explained that they worried others would copy their brilliant design idea. Oh, I see… Then why they asked if I was from the press? Obviously they got two set of answers. If I am from a media, they would allow me to take picture and publish it on the newspaper. Isn’t that end up more people copy their idea? I don’t understand their funny logic. Well, nevermind, jewellery is not my main shooting target.

I was almost blinded by the sparkling of jewellery until I walked to a corner. I opened my eyes and saw dozens of ugly green stones with irregular shape (see picture below). They caught my attention coz they didn’t shine. I asked the exhibitor, “Heck, what is this? They look like broken pieces of beer glass bottle.” The exhibitor said, “These are Moldavite (glass meteor). They were formed by condensed vapors after being hit by a meteorite (shooting star)… They contain energy that can bring good health and fortune to you (Bull s**t!!! Yeah right), blah, blah, blah… (More bull s**t)” Sound interesting and I like jewellery that is different from others, so I bought it. The small one costs RM70. I believe it will bring me good health and fortune.

Tamu Besar, Kota Belud

I went to the Tamu Besar (Big Native Market) of Kota Belud on last Saturday and Sunday (Sep 24-25). Actually I have been waiting for this annual grand event since May. The Tamu Besar is one of the most popular festivals in Sabah. After the visit for 2 days, the 1GB memory card of my digital camera went full. No kidding, my digicam was so busy working that it almost melted (Go ahead, so I will have an excuse to buy a DSLR). I was really glad I went there. Next year I will come again.

For those of you who don’t know “Tamu”, it is a weekly local market, where all the local farmers, fishermen and vendors sell their products such as vegetables, fruits, fish, shrimps, livestocks, traditional medicines, food, drink, cloth, shoes, handicrafts and almost every daily-use items. A truly village type setting. You are not only seeing the Tamu, you can smell the Tamu. The Tamu Ground of Kota Belud is the biggest Tamu in Sabah and open on every Sunday. Kota Belud is just northeast 70KM away from Kota Kinabalu. Due to the good road condition, you can get there by car in only an hour.

I can only use three words to describe this festival: Colorful, Interesting and Fun. “Tamu Besar” is the name of the festival that is more than just a Tamu. Bajau people is the second largest indigenous group in Sabah (first is KadazanDusun, third is Murut) and they are very popular on their colorful costumes, horsemanship and handicrafts. Tamu Besar is a 2-day event that let you see all these.

There are 5 things that you must check out during the Tamu Besar:

  1. Bajau Horsemen: See 100 Bajau horsemen in action then you know they are also known as the Cowboys of the East. Each horse is decorated with color mat and different design. It is an exciting day for the horsemen, tourists and horses.
  2. Bajau Beauty Queen Pageant: Beautiful Bajau and Iranun ladies, with unique and ornate costumes, line up for contest.
  3. Animals Sport: The buffalo racing and game with horses are really eye opener and make you laugh out loud.
  4. Tamu Ground: The biggest local market with lot of interesting stuffs not found in shopping mall.
  5. Performance: The colorful traditional dance performance by local Bajau, Iranun, Dusun, Malay and Chinese people.

If you miss the event, don’t worry. I have shared over 200 photos and 7 video clips in this web site for your viewing pleasure. My Streamyx broadband is not quite stable recently. It took me 4 hours to upload only 35MB of files. Such a pain… It always happens a few days every month, as if it got PMS. Anyway… here you go:

Coconut Festival (Pesta Kelapa) of Kudat

To recognise and appreciate the significant contribution of coconut, the 9th annual Pesta Kelapa (Coconut Festival) was organised successfully from Sep 8 to 11, 2005 in Kudat town. The event was held in Tomborungus Field, somewhere in the centre of the town, very convenient. If you plan to go to Kudat by bus, you can catch up the 8 AM or 1 PM bus near the bus terminal of Padang Merdeka. The drive will take 3 hours and the ticket costs about RM15 (one way). FYI, the 8AM bus from Kudat to Kota Kinabalu is available in front of the Ria Hotel. For locals, you would prefer to get there with your car as the road condition to Kudat is good.

If you find this event interesting, do not miss it next year. I heard that they would celebrate the 10th Pesta Kelapa (in year 2006) in big scale. The Coconut Fashion Queen Pageant, which had children and adult categories held in different day, is really something unique, creative, and of course, fun. There were over 50 coconut dress designs shown, and you can see the complete collection in this site. Somehow I think I should get a trophy or something. The Pesta Kelapa has been around for 9 years and I guess I am the only one who creates a online photo gallery for the Coconut Fashion Show. 🙂

There were some small-scale sport events and exhibition during daytime. The number of exhibition booths were much lesser than the Sago Festival and GATA Festival. A main thing that was left out was the opportunity to try out different exotic food and dishes made of coconut, like the Sago Festival. I expected to eat a lot of coconut food but ended up having my meals at the restaurants nearby. But overall, the event is well done.

Hari Merdeka 2005

Sorry for keeping you all waiting. My blog was not updated for 10 days because I was not in KK most of the time. From Sep 2 to 4, I was in Malacca. Sep 5 to 7, I was climbing Mount Kinabalu. Sep 8 to 11, I was in Kudat. Crazy tight schedule but little I could do to control it. Too many happening in September..

I just finished uploading the photos of Merdeka series. The Sep 16 Malaysia Day is approaching, so hopefully you are still in Merdeka mood to enjoy them. In general, the photo gallery pictures the Merdeka celebration in Sabah, namely, Merdeka Eve, Miss Merdeka Pageant, Merdeka Parade, and Malaysia flag everywhere.
