Pork Noodle

Sabah Pork Noodle (Sang Nyuk Mee)

Locally known as Sang Nyuk Mee (生肉面 in Chinese), Pork Noodle is an icon food of Sabah. Malaysians from other states think Sang Nyuk Mee is same as Mixed Pork Noodle, but Sang Nyuk Mee is totally Sabah style. The meat slices are fresh, smooth and tender. Sang Nyuk Mee literally means Raw Pork Noodle. Don’t worry, the pork is not eaten raw. It actually means the meat is made of fresh raw meat.

Pic: Sang Nyuk Mee is the favorite lunch of Sabah people.

Sabahans are so attached with Sang Nyuk Mee that this noodle is always highlighted in popular videos of Sabah.

Pic: Sang Nyuk Mee makes its appearance in Sabah Hakka Style video.

Pic: Sabah’s Ip Man video, a character being made to mock government, wants to eat Sang Nyuk Mee, LOL (which implies we want to run government the Sabahan way).

Sang Nyuk Mee is “invented” in Tawau in 1979, and now it becomes so popular that you can find it everywhere in Sabah. One of the best Sang Nyuk Mee is sold at Kedai Kopi Jia Siang (家香生肉面 in Chinese), a Chinese coffee shop in Lintas Plaza, Kota Kinabalu.

Pic: the location of Jia Siang Coffee Shop (See Location Map).

Pic: Kedai Kopi Jia Siang is full of people even during non-peak hours.

You can have Sang Nyuk Mee in two styles, (1) Noodle Soup or (2) Kon Lau Mee (干捞 in Chinese) style. In Kon Lau Mee style, noodles are served in separate bowl and mixed in aromatic dark soy sauce and pork oil, together with another bowl of tasty pork broth with pork slices, meatballs and internal organs (e.g. liver, intestines).

Kon Lau Mee is the standard style, so I order one (as shown in photo above). You may choose Mee Hong (rice noodle, which is white and thinner) if you think yellow noodle is too heavy.

Pic: Sang Nyuk Mee in Noodle Soup style (photo taken in other restaurant)

Pic: staff busy preparing Sang Nyuk Mee. My order arrived in minutes.

Pic: the noodle looks shiny with pork oil and dark soy sauce.

You need to stir the noodle so it mixes evenly with the dark sauce at bottom.

The Pork soup is the best part. The taste is deep and satisfying. Pork slices, meatballs and livers are given in soup by default. If you are not used to internal organ, you can ask for meat-only soup. They season the meat with tapioca powder & meat tenderizer, to give it extra smoothness and softness. Usually they use the slim meat at the rib section on the back of boar. The floating minced and crispy pork fat enhances the taste too.

Pic: Pork Noodle (Kon Lau style)

Sang Nyuk Mee is quite oily so it’s great as a delicious stomach filler for your breakfast or lunch. For chili lover, you can add the homemade blended chili of the coffee shop for spicy flavor.

Pic: Tofu with minced pork stuffing, RM1.20 (≈USD0.40) per piece, is a nice side order to complement Sang Nyuk Mee.

The standard Sang Nyuk Mee is RM7.50 (≈USD2.15). You may click the food menu above to see other variety and side dishes.

Welcome Sea Food Restaurant (Kota Kinabalu)

Welcome Sea Food Restaurant (Chinese name: 大茄来海鲜餐厅) is currently the hottest seafood restaurant in Kota Kinabalu city (KK). The secret of their success is simple: delicious seafood at reasonable price. I had my dinner with 5 adults and 2 children in this restaurant a few days ago. We ate so much until we almost puked, but each of us pay less than RM38 (≈USD11.30), which is normally over RM45 in other restaurants.

The restaurant started with about 20 10-seat tables. Now their business is so good that they expand their place, almost from start to end of a block, with over 50 tables. FYI, their restaurant in KK is the branch of their “headquarter” (first restaurant) in Beverly Industrial Park, Bundusan, Penampang.

The BEST seafood is FRESH seafood. They have many fish tanks for swimming and live fishes, lobsters, babylonia, prawns, comb shell, etc. You can just point here and there to pick your favorite seafood, and they will be served in 10 minutes.

Their address is: Lot G13-18, Ground Floor, Asia City Complex, Phase 2A, Jalan Asia City, 88300 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Below is the location map of the restaurant:

Below are the dishes we tried (quantity for 6 adults & 2 children). All of them taste really good.

Sour plum chicken: RM24 (≈USD7.30)
The chicken meat is mainly sweet with a bit of sour. Not bad.

Sparerib: RM30 (≈USD9)
Tasty pork in sweet sauce.

Sabah Vegetable: RM20 (≈USD6)
Your Sabah friends will recommend you to try this unique vegetables of Sabah (though it is introduced to Sarawak already). The vegetable looks like a shrub and we eat its young shots and stems, which are sweet and crunchy. A must try.

Steamed red snapper: RM60 (≈USD18)
To enjoy the best taste of fresh seafood, steaming it is the wisest way. Only fools fry the fresh fish.

Boiled shrimp: 1 Kilogram (KG) for RM60 (≈USD18)
You don’t want to care about high cholesterol once you start eating it, LOL.

Fish maw soup (costs RM16 ≈ USD5).

We finished all the dishes and the plates were so clean, haha. We also ordered white rice and a pot of Chinese tea. Everything (plus 6% government tax) costs RM223.20 (≈USD68). We are happy about the food and price. This restaurant is always full during dinner time. You must come before 6:30pm to get a seat in their air-conditioned room. If you are late, you have to sit outside, which is quite warm, but most people don’t mind.

The restaurant opens every day from 2:30pm to 12am. Below is their contact info if you want to know more:

Below are another two dishes we ordered in other day.

Kale (??), RM16 (≈ USD5) per dish

Claypot Seafood. Though delicious while served hot, it costs RM40 (≈ USD12), quite expensive consider the quantity is small.

The abalone looks so fresh. Next time I want to try it, yummy..

Ngiu Chap (Mixed Beef) of Kedai Kopi Loi Hin (来兴茶室)

Do remember the name Ngiu Chap, if you want to have “a taste of Sabah”. Literally Ngiu Chap means “Mixed Beef” (牛杂 in Chinese), which is a mix of beef slices, tendon, tripe, meat ball, liver and tongue cooked in yummy beef broth. Usually we eat it with Mee (yellow noodle) or Mee Hoon (rice noodle).

There are many Sabah restaurants serving Ngiu Chap. Personally I recommend Kedai Kopi Loi Hin (来兴茶室 in Chinese) in Donggongon town, about 10 KM away from Kota Kinabalu city (KK). Loi Hin has been making one of the best Ngiu Chap in Sabah for over 40 years.

Pic: Kedai Kopi Loi Hin (来兴茶室), “Kedai Kopi” means Coffee Shop.

Kedai Kopi Loi Hin is listed as one of the “100 Best Kopitiam of Malaysia” published by Tourism Malaysia. (Kopitiam means Coffee Shop)

Loi Hin is open from 7am to 3pm daily, and it’s always full during meal time.

Pic: worker preparing Ngiu Chap

Pic: Ngiu Chap served in different style. Most people order Ngiu Chap Mee (yellow noodle in beef soup, 牛杂汤面 in Chinese).

Pic: the food menu
Each bowl costs about RM10 (≈USD2.30), RM12 (≈USD2.70) if you request “ka-liau” (extra meat). *Prices as of Feb 2023.

Loi Hin is a typical Chinese coffee shop. Besides Ngiu Chap, you can order hot and soft drink such as coffee and tea here.

Pic: Ngiu Chap Mee (Mixed beef soup served with yellow noodle, 牛杂面 in Chinese)

Pic: close-up of Ngiu Chap Mee

As always, it’s delicious, with tangy aroma of beef, and the meat is fresh. The spleen tastes a bit raw and fishy though. The hot soup is the best part, it’s thick, as if they cook the whole cow in soup (just kidding). Usually I take one or two spoons of soup to excite my taste buds before eating.

You also can ask them to serve Mee Fong (white rice noodle, 米粉 in Chinese). The rice noodle is thinner and taste less oily.

By default, the noodle is served in soup. Order Kon Lau (dry noodle style, 干捞 in Chinese) if you prefer the Ngiu Chap soup served in separate bowl.

Lobster Nasi Lemak, First in Malaysia

(Update (Jan 2021): Tavern restaurant is closed).
Malaysians love Nasi Lemak (Coconut Milk Rice), which is our unofficial national dish, and I wonder why 1Malaysia campaign doesn’t use Nasi Lemak in their logo design, as this is the food that can unite every races. Well, probably it isn’t a good idea to have a patriotic logo that makes people drool lol.

The rice of Nasi Lemak is normally cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves that give it a pleasing aroma and creamy flavour. Standard nasi lemak is served with sambal (chili-based sauce) and various garnishes such as crispy ikan bilis (fried anchovy fishes), roasted peanuts, fresh cucumber slices and boiled egg.

Nasi lemak can be served in a variety of ways. For example, you can add fried chicken, cuttlefish, or rendang daging (beef) to the rice for a more fulfilling meal. You may have eaten hundreds of nasi lemak, but have you ever tried it once with lobster?

With me were MeiTzeu, a famous blogger and her husband Alex

For those who have curious tastebuds, Tavern Kitchen & Bar, one of the best restaurants in Kota Kinabalu City, is creative to make this exclusive menu for you.

Similar to traditional nasi lemak, Lobster Nasi Lemak consists of coconut infused steamed rice, pandan leaf and traditional ingredient to enhance the rice flavour, accompanied with tomato & cucumber slices, crispy anchovy, toasted peanuts, acar (mixed pickled), boiled egg & sambal (hot & spicy, pre-cooked). On top of these, it is also served with a 400gm lobster oven baked with chef marination ingredient, preferred sauce (3 topping choices: buttermilk, satay sauce and spicy sambal) top with cheese.

The cuisine is placed on banana leaf and mini bamboo sieve, giving it a nice touch. Nasi Lemak is always sold as an economic food in roadside stalls and hawker food centres, so I applaud the bold idea of Tavern Kitchen & Bar to push it to higher level.

Lobster Nasi Lemak tastes wonderful. The lobster meat is tender and well-marinated, and blend well with the taste of nasi lemak. Rice is the soul of Nasi Lemak and is well taken care of by Tavern. The savoury coconut milk-infused rice has fluffy texture and not oily.

Limited Time Offer: Tavern Kitchen & Bar offers promotional price of RM49++ for Lobster Nasi Lemak from October to December 2017 (Normal Price is RM79), and it’s limited to only 30 plates daily. FYI, even a normal nasi lemak is sold for over RM45 in Vancouver (Canada). For Lobster Nasi Lemak like this, it could cost 10 times more overseas.

Virgin Mojito

The recommended drink to go with Lobster Nasi Lemak is Virgin Mojito (lime juice with brown sugar and fresh mint, topped with club soda, RM15.90 per glass), a sour drink to remove the oily feel in your mouth.

To enjoy three kinds of seafood flavours, you can order two other side dishes:

  1. Tiger Prawn (RM49++): grilled tiger prawn 500gm, marinated with garlic, tuhau (local wild ginger) and top with cheese
  2. Giant Squid (RM38++): grilled large squid weight 450 gm with chef special marination, served with sambal and acar

Tavern Kitchen & Bar was located in Imago Shopping Mall, just next to Nike shop, on the same row as Starbucks in ground floor.

Sunset, Fireflies, Sambah River Cruise

River cruise in mangrove forest is one of the most popular tours in Sabah. Normally tourists pay about MYR200 to see long-nosed monkey, sunset and fireflies in wetlands of Klias, Weston or Kota Belud.

Sambah River Cruise

FYI you can see these in Tenghilan (in Tuaran district) for about half of the price (MYR80), but without wildlife such as proboscis monkey. Anyway, its advantages are: (1) the destination is less than an hour drive from Kota Kinabalu City (KK), (2) You will have a chance to sample a delicious snack called Udang Salai (Smoked Shrimps).

Udang Salai (Smoked Shrimps) is a special product of Sambah Village

This tour is named Sambah River Cruise because it is based in Kampung Sambah (Kampung means Village in Malay language). Before the river cruise, my group was invited to the house of David (our host) in Kampung Bunga, where welcoming drink and light refreshment were served, and an introduction about the trip was given.

Briefing at Kampung Bunga, Tenghilan

Then we moved to the jetty in Kampung Nouga (GPS: 6.233895, 116.307495) around 5pm to start our first river cruise in mangrove forest.

Jetty in Kampung Nouga, Tenghilan

Mangrove Forest

As part of the Sulaman Lake, this wetland has been a fishing zone. If you are an avid angler, you can request them to include fishing as part of the activities.

Mangrove is the breeding place for seafood.

Technically this swamp is a lagoon as it is directly connected to the sea via a channel. During high tide, fishes such as grouper follow the sea current to enter this mangrove to forage and breed, so it’s not uncommon that you can catch very big fish here.

The river cruises are between 5pm to 8:00pm

Tuaran has one of the best mangrove forest near KK. The area we visited was mostly intact and large. The brackish water may look dirty, but crabs and prawns grow faster and fatter in such environment. The mudflat of mangrove is also the best place to harvest clams.

Navigate in maze of mangrove forest

Located between sea and river, mangrove swamp is one of the most peculiar forest in the world. The trees can grow in the water and tolerant to saline water, and they breathe with roots. Living among the trees are some weird animals such as the walking and jumping fish, mud-skipper and colorful fiddler crabs with huge pincer.

Approaching Kampung Sambah, a fishing village

Our boat navigated in a maze of mangrove forest network. The panoramic view of lush mangrove forest is impressive. Some trees grow over 10 Meters. I think Sabah Wildlife Department can bring in some proboscis monkey families. I’m sure they can live happily here.

Group photo at jetty of Kampung Sambah village

59% of the mangrove forest of Malaysia is located in Sabah. Do you know Sabah has both the smallest (KK Wetland) and largest (Kinabatangan) Ramsar sites of Malaysia? Ramsar Site is a wetland site designated of international importance in terms of conservation, ecology and biodiversity.

Kampung Sambah is a small fishing village next to Sulaman Lake of Tuaran

Udang Salai (Smoked Shrimps)

Around 5:30pm, we arrived Kampung Sambah, a water village next to the lake.

The tour includes a stroll in Kampung Sambah Village

The houses in Kampung Sambah are on stilt to avoid flood and high tide

We took a walk in the village, which has a population of 200 of mainly Bajau people. Most of them live in wooden houses on stilt on the mudflat of mangrove, a typical view of fishermen village in Sabah.

Smoke House for making Smoked Shrimps (Udang Salai)

Only two villages, Kampung Sambah and Kampung Penimbawan, produce Smoked Shrimps (Udang Salai)

However, this ordinary village has an extraordinary snack called Udang Salai (Smoked Shrimps). Believe me. The taste of Udang Salai is unforgettable. Once you try it, you would crave for it occasionally.

The burning wood gives Smoked Shrimps (Udang Salai) very nice aroma

Shrimps are abundant in this area. Only fresh shrimps (no frozen shrimp) are used in making Udang Salai.

Udang Salai (Smoked Shrimps) is one of the tastiest Sabah snack I’ve ever tried

They have a simple small hut with wood burning stove to smoke the shrimps. The small shrimps are placed on mesh wire above the burning wood and being smoked until they are totally dry and cooked. The taste is yummy and crunchy with nice barbecue flavor. Even the shell is edible. You can’t stop once you start eating it.

A small pack of Udang Salai can cost about MYR30

Sambah Village is one of the largest producers of Udang Salai, apart from its neighbors Kampung Penimbawan in Tuaran. Smoked shrimps are sold at tamu (morning open market) of Tenghilan on Thursday and Tuaran on Sunday. It’s always sold out before 8am.

You can buy Smoked Shrimps (Udang Salai) in weekly open market (tamu) of Tenghilan (Thu) and Tuaran (Sun)

Sunset & Firefly

Though I wanted to stay back to eat more Udang Salai, we had to start our second river cruise at 6:10pm.

Departing for sunset and firefly cruise

Waiting for the magic hour of sunset

Soon our boat approached the estuary, where we could see the sun started sinking into the ocean. The blazing sun ray gradually turned into warm and golden beam, marking the start of twilight.

See the love shape cloud?

WOW!!!

The sunset view was hypnotizing. Even though it rained earlier, the extra moisture in the air is the recipe for making of a beautiful sunset. The colors of the sky and cloud went wild and intense, and we were lucky to see the famous flaming sunset of Sabah.

Spectacular sunset at Tenghilan

After the sunset, our boat cruised slowly in the total darkness in mangrove. We saw some congregating fireflies flashing on the mangrove tree like summer Xmas tree. The density and scale of fireflies here are small, but good enough for people who never see firefly.

Dinner at the end of tour, rice with fried chicken, crabs, mixed vegetables and some fruits

Fresh crabs from the mangrove

The river cruise ended around 7:30pm and we enjoyed our dinner at David’s house.

How to get there

This destination is less than 50 Kilometers from KK. The tour operator can pick you up at your hotel. The fee is about MYR80 (about USD$20) per person for this half-day tour (3:30pm-8:30pm).

Food Trucks of Sabah

Two types of cars excited me when I was a little boy, i.e. ice cream truck and “Roti Van” (a type of van that sells variety of bread, pastry, candy, snack, and toys). However, these mobile shops had disappeared from my neighborhood for decades.

Some months ago, when I was playing Pokemon Go at Tanjung Aru Beach, a food truck caught my attention. It brought back my childhood memory, so I was happy to give it a try.

Owning a food truck is like owning a mobile shop

It was LOCA food truck which sells focaccia (a flat oven-baked Italian bread product similar in style and texture to pizza doughs). I have tried all three breads on their menu. Personally I highly recommend their “Moo” bread with juicy beef.

Selling food without a shop is possible

In general, food trucks serve great food because they rely on words of mouth to attract more customers, so they can’t afford to be mediocre.

“The Sabahan” by LOCA Food Truck. It’s local favorite “sayur manis” sautee with mushroom, served with wild fried ginger and cheese sandwiched with Loca’s signature fresh focaccia.

Though food truck is common in overseas, it’s quite new in Sabah. If you are interested in special food that is served fresh and hot on the spot, the following is a list of food trucks in Kota Kinabalu City.

Simple cooking area in food truck

You may follow their social media to know their whereabout. They would come to your neighborhood soon!

Business On Wheels (BOW) Club

While ordering my food, I looked at the owners of LOCA food truck, Jonathan and Alexander. From the smile on their faces, they really love what they are doing. Later I learn that I was having a taste of their dream (food).

“The Moo” by Loca: Locally inspired BBQ pulled beef served with locally grown pineapple sandwiched with Loca’s signature fresh focaccia.

You will see such food trucks getting more and more popular in our city. KW Machinery is the promoter behind this.

Delicious food from LOCA Food Truck

The core business of KW Machinery is selling imported heavy machineries such as cranes and excavator.

However, their owner, Kenny Wong is really fascinated by mobile trucks and decide to build a community to encourage locals to start a mobile business.

Colourful food trucks

He thinks mobile shop is a workable concept, and he just needs to motivate and help the budding entrepreneur to have a great start and sustainable business.

I know some of you are fancy of pink color. Yes, pink food truck exists.

Therefore, the food truck is sold at very affordable price, starting from MYR40,000. For that money, you get a car, and a mobile shop for free!

Latest model of KW Machinery Food Truck

Because they want to promote Business on Wheels so they don’t set high profit margin. The food trucks are high quality Japanese cars designed for durability.

Food Truck for display purpose

Besides, to make sure the owners to run their business successfully, they also offer training on business model and marketing strategy. For example, LOCA food truck was facing difficulty to generate sales in the beginning. After getting some advice on marketing, they are able to sell really well now.

Advantages of Food Trucks

I’m sure almost everyone has a dream to start a busine$$. Sadly, if without plan and action, 99.9999% of our dreams end up as a daydream.

Food trucks of KW Machinery are high quality Japanese car

Even if you have a good plan to open a restaurant or shop, very soon you will hold back due to the high rental cost. The No.1 rule of business is good location, and that’s also the no.1 problem for start-up.

Food Truck makes the dream of Jonathan (left) and Alex (right) comes true

Therefore, the solution is Mobile Shop that allows you to run a business without paying expensive rent. KW Machinery has range of mobile trucks from 1 to 10 tons. Other than food, you also can sell other stuffs and services such as salon, clothing, cafe, mobile advertisement and events.

Food trucks of KW Machinery

KW Machinery will teach buyers the proper way of running mobile truck business, for example, getting trading and mobile licenses.

Group photo of bloggers and KW Machinery Team

It’s because the staffs there helped LOCA Food Truck whole-heartedly, they are no longer a “little potato” who works for others like nobody, Jonathan and Alexander said.

Food Hunting at Menggatal Plaza

A traveller said, “I won’t have the memory of a city, if I don’t remember how its food tastes like.” Smell is the sense most closely linked with memory, and it can trigger a memory. We tend to recall more happy things while we enjoy great food. Agree? That’s why our food quest is a lifelong journey. Thanks to EatBah.com, I found some great stuffs at Menggatal Plaza (see Location Map or Street View), about 20 minutes away from Kota Kinabalu City (KK).

Relax Cafe

My first impression of Relax Cafe is a home-like cozy place filled with nice aroma of coffee.

Relax Cafe

The most ideal picture of my life is reading a book and relaxing in a cafe. Besides coffee, I love the smell of books. Coffee and books are prominent elements in the trendy interior design of this little cafe, so yea, I like its identity.

Interior of Relax Cafe (Click to Enlarge)

This cafe makes smart use of spacing and soft lighting to create many “small worlds”. You can find a little personal corner that belongs to you and your friends. In city, most cafes want to stuff as many desks as possible in a small area, making us feel like sitting in an open public area.

Relax Cafe: Oreo Lover (MYR12)

Most other cafes sell mainly cakes and dessert. Relax Cafe has some stomach fillers. The following are some of the items (*Serve No Pork):
– Oreo Lover (MYR12)
– Hot Commando Latte (MYR10)
– Cappuccino (MYR8.50)
– Hot Relax Chocolate (MYR7.50)
– Relax Signature Cheesy Snacks (MYR12.90)
– Cheesy Chicken on Papan (MYR28)
(Prices as of Nov 2016)

Relax Cafe: Cappuccino (MYR8.50) and Hot Relax Chocolate (MYR7.50)

Relax Cafe: relax signature cheesy snacks (MYR12.90) (avalanche of cheese!)

Relax Cafe: Cheesy Chicken on Papan (MYR28)

When I was looking around, I saw a pretty girl smiling at me. I took a deep breath, walked to her, and said, “Sorry Miss, would you please move away? I need the power points behind you.” Ok, I’m just kidding. She is Kimberly Vung, the Miss Sabah Tourism 2016, in our food hunting group. I’m just trying to say that it’s very thoughtful this cafe has many power points, something that I always search high and low in other restaurants.

Juara Express

What’s for lunch / dinner? For food, I’m very lazy to think what to eat, so Nasi Ayam (Chicken Rice) is my default choice.

Restoran Juara Xpress (Halal)

Therefore, if the price of chicken rice rises, that’ll affect my income. In KK, most chicken rice costs MYR7 and more. In Menggatal Plaza, you still can find cheap chicken rice at Juara Express:
– Nasi Ayam Goreng (Fried Chicken Rice) (MYR5.30)
– Ayam Kon Lou Mee (Noodle with Chicken) (MYR5.80)

Restoran Juara Xpress: Chicken Rice (Nasi Ayam Goreng (MYR5.30)). Thank you Eilvane for holding the bite so we can take photos.

The quantity of the chicken is not bad, at least the meat is more than cucumber. You can have noodle there too.

About Manggatal (Menggatal) Town

The correct name of this town should be Manggatal (means itchy). During British colonial era, the river there was used like a highway. There were many types of Mango trees grew along the river bank. One of them is the Bulunuh tree. Unfortunately, this bulunuh tree gives off latex which can cause body allergic reaction if contacted. To counter the itch, you have to get an old shirt of the person and tie strips of the shirt around the tree. This shall stop the allergies ASAP.

Giant Fig Fruit with Big Uses

Note: This article contains incorrect information. This fruit is not a fig. It’s a fruit under the genus Crescentia (蒲瓜), which is more related to Calabash or bottle gourd. My apology.

Medicines are bad, herbs are good. This is how most Sabahans view drugs. It’s always a bitter feeling to bring home a lot of colorful candies (pills) from the clinic. Sabahans describe western medicines as a powerful but “toxic” remedy, and you can often hear us say, “It’s too ‘chemical’ and has side effects!”

Fig fruit is normally very small

That’s why we prefer herbs as it’s more natural and gentle (true in most cases, but not absolutely). In old days, local people have been using plant to heal various type of diseases. Some scientists even say our rainforest is the biggest pharmacy in the world.

Fig fruit is a very important food source for wildlife of Borneo

Two months ago, I was intrigued by a photo taken by my friend in tamu (local weekly alfresco market) of Donggongon town. It is a huge fig fruit as big as a cannon ball!

Known as Buah Maja locally, fig tree is everywhere in Sabah. It is so common that Quentin Phillipps, the author of the book Phillipps’ Guide to the Mammals of Borneo and Their Ecology, says in Borneo, you are rarely more than 100 Meters away from a fig. Fig is the fruit of life in rainforest, and it’s an important food source for Borneo wildlife.

Though I’ve seen dozens of fig fruit species, most of them are small, I never saw one that is so big. Therefore, I went to the tamu of Donggongon town, which is open in the mornings of every Thursday and Friday. It didn’t take long for me to locate the stall that sold this fig fruit. The seller, Mr. Wong is very friendly and eager to introduce this amazing fruit to me.

I was surprised to learn that this fig fruit is consumed as herb rather than fruit. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Though Sabah doesn’t have apple, this giant-green-apple-looking fig fruit probably can offer the same health benefits.

According to Mrs Wong, the wife of seller, she discovered this fruit in Lido and paid RM20 for it. At first her husband scold her for paying too much. Due to high Cholesterol level, she used to wake up with a dizzy head in the morning. After she drank the juice of this fruit, miracle happened. This discomfort vanished.

Therefore, her husband also becomes an advocate of this fig fruit. He plants and sells the fruits and juice. Based on what I found online, figs are high in fiber and a good source of magnesium, manganese, calcium, copper and potassium (which helps lower blood pressure), as well as vitamins, especially K and B6.

Other alleged benefits include detoxification and the ability to cure asthma, hemorrhoid, thyroiditis, minor kidney problem, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, constipation, fever, cough, etc. (I would strongly recommend you to see a doctor if you are sick). Anyway, the nutrition composition may vary among different fig species. Not all figs are edible.

The good thing is – herb is relatively safe to experiment for people who are looking for alternative treatment for ailments and hard-to-cure diseases. This fig juice can be taken as a traditional tonic too.

Mr. Wong sells the fig fruit for RM5-10 each. You can boil its pulp with water for 3 hours until the juice turns dark. If you are too busy to do this, you can buy the juice from him for only RM3 per bottle (which is boiled with other herbs too). You can drink the juice like water. However, it’s not an instant fix that can heal everything overnight, so you need to try it for some time.

If you want to plant this fig, the seedling is sold for RM20. It takes 3 years to mature, and it fruits throughout the year, so you will have so many fruits that you can even sell or share with others.

Everyone wants to be healthy. Selling multivitamin supplement makes nutraceutical firms laugh all the way to the bank. The fact is – these synthetic and unnatural forms of vitamin can’t be used by the body in the same way as natural versions, and it could do more harm than good, according to the Organic Consumers Association.

Most man-made vitamins are simply a waste of money. I used to take heavy daily dose of Vitamin C for months, but it did nothing more than turning my urine into yellow. After I get real Vitamin C by eating fruits, I see positive changes in less than a week. Some might argue that I should pay higher price to get Vitamin pills of better quality. Well, why not spending that money to buy real and natural food?

The expensive solution is not always the best solution. Pharmaceutical companies and some doctors love clients to buy medicines, so they can make profit. Therefore, they like to label folk prescription with the magic phrase “not scientifically proven”, rather than saying “I don’t know because our institution is too poor to fund a research. But I can’t say that it might work because I won’t make any money. Besides, I’m so afraid that you would sue me if anything doesn’t go well.”

For example, Tongkat Ali could be a great alternative to the expensive blue “V” pill and needs no doctor recommendation. Soursop is an excellent agent to fight cancer better than radiotherapy, which is infamous for its nasty side effects.

Ok, back to the fig fruit. I’m a very curious person, so I can’t stop without looking what is inside this big fruit. I bought one home to dissect it in the kitchen.

This fruit has very hard and smooth skin, so be careful with your knife. For my mom, it’s an easy task to cut it into half. The skin is thin and hard, like an eggshell.

The flesh of this fig fruit is sweet and sour, with weird taste like medicine.

I can smell a very fresh and fruity aroma when it is open. The flesh is marshy and soft, with scattered brown seeds. I tasted its pulp. It’s sweet with a bit of sour that smells like herb. Frankly it isn’t yummy, which is logic, because things with medical properties never taste great.

This fig is just one of the treasures in Borneo. We should read the story below:
The U.S. National Cancer Institute funded a 1987 plant collection expedition on the island of Borneo in the Malaysian State of Sarawak. Among the samples obtained were those from the tree Calophyllum lanigerum var austrocoriaceum, an incredibly rare species. When extracts of this plant were discovered to show good antiviral activity toward the AIDS-causing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), researchers returned to the site of the original collection to find that the tree was gone, cut down for firewood or building purposes. You see. A precious plant that might hold the key to cure AIDS was used as firewood or building materials! We really need to carry out more studies to uncover more secret formula in our plant to battle illness.
