Miss Sabah 2007 – Final (May 5)

Nearly 300 photos, this is the BIGGEST photo album that MySabah.com has ever made. 16 finalists of Miss Sabah 2007 competed in 3 rounds, i.e., (1) Casual Dress + Introduction, (2) Swimwear, and (3) Evening Gown. After 3 rounds, top 5 contestants will be selected to enter the Final round, to answer some questions for testing of IQ. Besides, 6 subsidiary titles (Miss Photogenic, Best Swimwear, Miss Talent, Miss Congeniality, Most Popular Online, Best Evening Gown) will be awarded.

With thousands pair of eyes watching, all the finalists were very nervous. I also felt stressed when I sensed their fear in their shivering speech, which they had practised probably a hundred time. Fortunately, none of them got serious stage fright that made them forgot what they wanted to say. Height is quite an important factor coz the winner will compete again in national level (Miss World Malaysia) later, and even international level if lucky. Personally, I supported Madelyne and Jacqueline as they are tall and have the look of a queen.

Hmm… quite disappointed with the swimwear round coz it was too brief. Instead of walking out slowly one by one, they do the swimwear round in group and moved very fast. “Huh! Over lah???” was my response coz I thought this was the most anticipated round.

Five girls, namely, Madelyne, Jacqueline, Emily, Cyndi and Cathress entered the final round. Each of them was asked the similar questions like “If you become Miss Sabah, how would you motivate the women / promote our country / serve the community…” Probably too nervous, Jacqueline paused after saying 2 sentences, luckily a big applause of encouragement from the crowd brings her confidence back, so she managed to finish quite nicely. Phew.. I really sweated for her. Madelyne had sour throat that night, though nervous, she did well.

At last, the announcment of Miss Sabah 2007 winner, my heart was screaming, “Madelyne, Madelyne, Madelyne…” and yes she won. Jacqueline won 2nd-runner up and Best Evening Gown too. So glad for them… Below is the final result:

Miss Sabah 2007: Madelyne M. Nandu (No. 7)
1st Runner-Up + Most Popular Online: Cathress Gielbert (No. 12)
2nd Runner-Up + Best Evening Gown: Jacqueline Lo Ker Jack (No. 13)
Miss Photogenic: Emily @ Ng Ying Ying (No. 1)
Best Swimwear: Cyndi Chong Suk Fei ( No. 8 )
Miss Talent: Amanda Gilbert Mojinun (No. 4)
Miss Congeniality: Stephanie Stella Lai Set Li (No. 3)

I salute the beauties for their contribution on fundraising for aiding Society for Sabah Heart Fund & Flood Victims. They also visited the unfortunate children at Seri Mengasih Centre, brought joy to the city with motorcade in Visit Malaysia Year 2007… No matter they win or not, they are all beautiful because of their kindness. All the best to them.

Miss Sabah Motorcade 2007 (May 2)

This never happened in Sabah before. Miss Sabah 2006 and 16 beautiful finalists of Miss Sabah 2007, together with Police, 4-Wheel Drive, Sabah Big Bikers Club, Diriwan (Lotto88), Vintage Cars and SM Shao Tao School Brass Band, formed the Miss Sabah Motorcade, a long line of over 30 cars and bikes. We gathered near the tennis court of Sutera Harbour around 5pm. It has been a rainy day for past few days. Luckily the weather turned good after a heavy rain at 3pm.

Don’t worry if the photos here look blur to you. You can see all the high quality version in the photo album. After the flag-off ceremony by Kota Kinabalu city Mayor at 6pm, the motorcade started to move slowly and passed through major KK city roads / landmark such as Wisma MUIS, State Mosque, Sadong Jaya, Asia City, Gaya Street, Wisma Merdeka, Central Market, Centre Point Sabah and stopped at BED, Waterfront.

All the beauties, 2 of them on each 4-wheel drive, waved their hands to thousand of excited crowd along the roadside. This year the publicity and exposure of Miss Sabah must make these finalists feel like a superstar. By 6:30pm, we reached BED of Waterfront. The timing is good coz the sky turned dark shortly. Worrying about the rain, the motorcade didn’t stop at stage near Marina Court and Promenade Hotel, as planned initially.

Later at 10pm, the Miss Sabah 2007 finalists catwalk on the stage. Their evening gown, which made them looked so gorgeous, was designed by SIA. I took a lot of pictures. With that big collection of photos in my photo album, by now you should be able to see them closely and tell whom you like the most. I still stick with my choice (Madelyne, Jacqueline, Stella) mentioned in my previous blog. But Emily also caught my attention that time as she has a “star” face.

Launching of Pesta Kaamatan 2007, Ranau

This year the official State-Level launching of Pesta Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) was at Ranau on May 1, which marked the start of Harvest Festival month for KadazanDusun and Murut people. Last year the launching was at Kota Marudu. Different district has its own ways and colours of celebrating, so you won’t see the same thing. But one thing for sure is that the event will turn the town into a busy and lively spot. FYI, Sabah has over 30 districts.

Rice is the most important food for Sabah people, so the month after the harvest of paddy is the time for the thanksgiving festival. We don’t plant that much paddy nowadays, but the tradition is still carrying on. We will have Mangavau ceremony to recover Bambarayon (Paddy God), wishing for another bountiful harvest next time. You would hear the touching story of “Huminodun”, the name of a Goddess who sacrificed herself to save the people from starving. The Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Queen) beauty pageant is also meant to remember this greatest female in KadazanDusun legand and pass on her spirit.

Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Queen) beauty pageant will let you see the beauty of KadazanDusun ladies in their local traditional costumes. 14 contestants were competing for Ranau-district Unduk Ngadau title this year. If you look at the photos, you will find that most of them dressed in Kadazan Ranau costume, which has very unique design and pattern only found in Ranau and Kundasang districts.

There were two rounds for Unduk Ngadau competition. First round is catwalk and introduction. Then 10 finalists were selected for knowledge test in second round, where they picked the winners. The girls also performed some traditional dances of indigenous people such as Sumazau, Sazau, Limbai. The VIPs would be invited to dance Sumazau with them. In case you are curious about what questions were being asked in their knowledge test, here you go:

  • Malaysia is a country that successfully cultivates the unity among the people of different races and religions. In your opinion, how does our country achieve this?
  • Ranau district is a place of interest for Malaysian and overseas tourists. In your opinion, besides having great nature such as Kinabalu Park, is there any other way to attract more tourists to visit our place?
  • What lesson can we learn from the legend of Huminodun that should become part of the value in our generation?
  • If you are chosen to be a Unduk Ngadau and given the opportunity to organise a welfare activity, what is the FIRST activity you want to do and why?
  • The statistics, which shows the drug abuse among the teenagers, has come to an alarming state. In your opinion, what steps should be taken to resolve this issue?
  • In your opinion, what are the benefits and advantages that we can gain from celebration of Harvest Festival in Sabah every year?

Thanks to SESB. There was a 30-minute power blackout that delayed the programme. After a long wait, the Unduk Ngadau for Ranau district was finally born. Below is the result (see photo above, from left to right):
3rd Runner-Up: Sulina Musing (contestant no.6)
1st Runner-Up: Florisa Samin (contestant no.15)
Unduk Ngadau (Ranau): Magdalen John (contestant no.4)
2nd Runner-Up + Best Traditional Dress: Merry Masion (contestant no.9)
4th Runner-Up: Fiona Fey Fedelis (contestant no.7)

The three girls below are my “favourite”, and based on their look, I personally believe that they can make it to top 3. But as you know, besides having a pretty face, they also need to do well in Q&A session.

I would vote for Madelyne coz she looks mature and pretty, well-educated (university student) and experienced in beauty pageant (as she is State-Level Unduk Ngadau, Miss Kaamatan, for 2005). For Jacqueline, I haven’t met her personally. Simply judging on photo… she looks smart and fashionable, good height and overall figure, and other unqiue elements that would make her a potential winner for first runner-up. As for Stella, wherever she stands, she always catches people’s eyeballs. However, her “cuteness” would make her looks like a small girl. If you look at previous big beauty pageants, you would notice that the champions are usually the one look like big sister and a leader. So I think she would win 2nd runner-up or Miss Photogenic. These are just my personal guest only. What do you think?

Miss IPEX and Fashion Show

This 2-in-1 event was organised by IPEX property exhibition in Sabah Trade Centre last weekend. As usual, I went there to take some pictures of pretty girls. It had been a while I didn’t do this. This was not really a beauty pageant though. Even the judges were not from fashion or modeling sector. It is just for fun only, but the cash prize is real.

Each participating booth (company) sent an “unlucky” female staff to show-show on the stage. Every girl started with a self-introduction, demo and promote the products of her company, EQ test, and talent show (if any). This IPEX Miss Personality was something “play play”.

There were 13 contestants. Since it was a Miss “Personality” competition, it is not about look. That’s why aunties also could join. Some were very shy, some very confident, some even very daring. All of them have unique personality, and it was fun to see how they interact. I was a bit surprised with the result, but nevermind lah, as it was not something formal.

Among all of them, I particulary (most others too) like contestant no. 8. She is so hot. Her talent show created the biggest WOW that evening. Curious? Just check out the photo gallery to see what she did. She made me felt great being there.

After that, there were two fashion show, the most anticipated highlight of the night. First with the theme “Inside Out” (wearing underwear outside?), second with the theme “Coral Fish.” Yes… you will like it.

Warisan Square Party

Happy New Year 2007! How was your celebration? I hope the never-ending rain didn’t affect your holiday plan. MySabah.com is hosted in US, not Malaysia, so the slow line caused by Taiwan earthquake was (and is) affecting my blog. The connection speed is like crawling, so it is a pain to upload photos to my site. While others had fun doing new year countdown, I was doing file upload countdown, 99% files remaining… 98% files remaining… (and prayed that connection could keep alived, terrible…).

I believe all of you in KK had seen the advertisement of Warisan Square soft opening party. The event sounded interesting but unfortunately it crashed with my other programme. So I could only allocate one hour to check out their fashion show. Amber Chia was there to catwalk too. The first time I saw her was in the 1Borneo launching in 2005. I think Miss Malaysia was there too. This time they and other models were only a few feet away from me, making my photo shooting easier. Haha… hopefully next time they will come even closer to me, my new year wish.

Someone told me that Amber Chia is from Tawau of Sabah. Is it true kah? It is cool that Sabah has an international celebrity. In the fashion show, I noticed a model that looks like Amber Chia. I post the photos of them below and see if you can tell who is Amber Chia.

I will not tell you the answer. Just check out the photo gallery. After comparing a few more photos, you should be able to find the answer. To celebrate New Year, from today onward, I will blog every day until Jan 15. If you like nature and wildlife, this will be a great news for you coz 10 of the blog are related to the cool animals found in Sabah. Consider it as a new year gift from me. There are many precious photos that you can’t find elsewhere, as well as some funny stories, so do remember to pay me a visit regularly.

Bikini photo-shooting

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hope you all can see this greeting before your eyes are drawn to the photos below. Last year I blogged about the bikini photography session in Palm Villa Beach, Kinarut (Dec 18, 2005). After 1 year, I decide to post the photos, as a Xmas gift to you. There were 3 beautiful Sabah models joined us. Needless to say, they all have pretty faces and nice figures.

Model 1. Yvonne Wong
The First Runner-Up + Miss Popular of Miss Malaysia Chinatown 2004. Friendly and got lovely smile. A power station.

Model 2. Chin
The Second Runner-Up of Miss Hakka 2003, also the Miss Photogenic + Second Runner-Up of Miss Malaysia Chinatown 2004. Sweet and Cute. Very professional and expressive. Any picture that has her looks perfect.

Model 3. Wendy Lu
Last, but not the least. The Second Runner-Up + Miss Newell of Miss Malaysia Tourism 2005 (Sabah State Selection). Fresh and Mature. I like her long and silky black hair, which adds a seductive touch to her photos.

Each of them has unique character and style. Professional photographers need to interact a lot with the models to bring the best out of them. It was far more challenging than I thought. FYI, two of them also the models in Borneo Jewellry Fair 2005.

YoBe Magazine

I went to Centre Point Sabah yesterday to see the My ICMS Exhibition in Palm Square. It turned out to be an disappointment coz there were only a few telco booths which offer something we can find everywhere in town.

Later I found that many people were waiting for the launching of YoBe Magazine, the first fashion and lifestyle magazine in Sabah. It is a bold decision to start a magazine, as many Malaysian businessmen say, the quickest way to lose money is to start a magazine in Malaysia. They will need to work very hard to attract limited number of readers in Sabah.

Well, I am always supportive to people who want to create stuffs for the locals so I bought a copy. The content is more targeted for teenagers and very young readers, so it is just right for me (haha!). I guess the name “YoBe” means “Be Young”? I didn’t know there was a launching by YoBe Magazine that day, so I didn’t bring my better camera. All the photos were taken using my lousy Sony Cybershot. The photos are a bit grainy (noise) but still acceptable for viewing. The event was supposed to start at 1 PM but they started at 1.30PM. I was so hungry so I didn’t stay there until the end of the show. I only captured some photos of their fashion show. Enjoy!
