Helicopter Joyride

Helicopter Joyride

Whenever I was on a plane, I would always try to get a few aerial shots (and end with disappointing result). Finally I had the chance to try aerial photography from a helicopter with a few photographers, about a thousand feet above the ground. Though the joyride was short, it was an exciting experience.

We gathered at the Sabah Air helicopter terminal about 7:30am at Tanjung Aru. The weather was good and the sky was clear. After weighting our bodies and photography equipments, we were presented a 10-minute video about safety briefing and onboard procedures. We met the pilot, then we started flying at 8:09am.

The helicopter flied at very high speed (higher force of gravity). My ears felt the air pressure and I got a bit of motion sickness. But very soon my body was adapted to the change. The window at the side was open, so I could hold the camera a bit outside the window to take the aerial photos. It was hard… The wind was so strong that my len was like being pressed by strong hand, and had difficulty to auto-focus. If I am not mistaken, the speed was 90 Mile/Hour (Note: not KM/Hour).

The flight was only 15 minutes, we started from Tanjung Aru, then passing by STAR Hotel, Sutera Harbour, Tunku Abdul Rahman Islands,
Kota Kinabalu city, Likas Mosque, Yayasan Sabah, Penampang, etc. High in the sky, everything was so small on the ground.. the buildings looked like toy houses, traffic looked like running ants.. KK city is so beautiful..

We were so busy shooting photos. We only had a few seconds to shoot decision. Due to the vibration of the helipcopter, I use Shutter Priority and take the pictures in JPG+RAW format. Every scene passed so fast, we really had no time to adjust camera setting and preview the photos on LCD. The flight ended at 8:25am. “AH! Return to base so soon?!” We all wished it could be longer. I like the photo below coz it looks like a typical scene from 007 movie (James being attacked by enemy from helicopter).

Now I can call myself an “Aerial Photographer.” Since Sheikh Muszaphar also can call himself an “Angkasawan,” I don’t see any problem here. Below are more photos. Click each of them to see bigger photo. Some places I have no idea where they are (the photos between Likas Mosque and STAR Hotel). Probably someone could tell me.

Good Brothers

According to Chinese belief, the gate of hell will “officially” open on Aug 26 this year. But the party has begun much earlier. We will see people burning paper money and incense everywhere. About ghost, Confucious said, “Respect them but stay away from them.” So don’t purposely step on the stuffs, as there might be spirit gathering around those spots. My another advice is – if you see, feel, or smell anything weird in this month, just ignore it totally, don’t say anything, and pretend you don’t sense it, unless you want to ask for 4D number lah.

We also believe that talking about ghost will attract them to come by, so we usually refer them as “Good Brothers” and avoid saying the word “Ghost”. I don’t own a pair of eyes that can see the spiritual world (luckily), but I had heard so many stories about them from my parents and friends. But I think I can “feel” their presence sometimes. Maybe I can share a few personal experience with you here.

When I was about 10 years old, I followed my parents to visit my uncle and cousins who lived in Sandakan. His house was surrounded by dense wood, quite dark but cooling. The room that my family stayed had a window… If I opened the window, I could see a cemetery just hundred yard away. Being a child, I was not afraid of that. One evening, I was playing alone in the room, under dim light. My relatives and parents were all watching TV in the living room outside. I was sitting right under that window. Suddenly I felt that someone was behind me. It was a very chilly feeling. I turned my head and looked around, but I saw nobody else. Then the chill got stronger, I was freak out, ran out of my room and looked for my parents. That was really scary, though I didn’t see anything. That’s why I still can remember the feeling vividly until today. After 20 years, my mom told me something. She said, “Son… the house of your uncle was haunted. One day when I entered the room, I saw a big black shadow standing behind you, when you were playing alone with toys. When it saw me, it flyed out of the window next to you.” Eeekk… so geli…

The second case was in my secondary school year. I was so interested in astronomy (crazy actually!), so I liked to watch stars. One night I waked up at 1AM to watch stars, coz the sky was clearer and the stars were brighter late at night. I remember I was looking for a comet. Then I saw a big yellow fire ball, with a long tail, flying over my head. It lasted for 5 or 6 seconds. I was so excited. I thought it was a shooting star. Many years later, in April this year, I was taking photos around 11PM in Kinabalu Park and I saw this “fire ball” again. This time it was quite far away, and it vanished after a few seconds, not enough time for me to pull out the camera to shoot. The older people would say this is the spirit of the death. Whenever it appears, that means someone dies nearby that area…

The third case was the time I studied in a college in Subang Jaya. I liked to study very late at night until 2, 3 AM, coz it was very queit. One night I was studying alone in the living room downstair. I left the door open to let fresh air came in. It was total darkness outside and everyone had fallen in sleep. That was nobody around, but suddenly I smelled very strong perfume, so strong that it was like a heavily make-up lady sitting next to me. I ran to my room as fast as a Olympic runner.

Fourth case, I was very hardworking and worked until 7 or 8pm every day for my first job. The whole building (Wisma Sabah) was almost empty and all the office was close at that time. My cubicle was very near to the pantry. I am sure that I heard someone walking and even coughing in the pantry. But everytime I went and checked the pantry, nobody there. This has happened a few times. My brother also worked there before, and he told me that someone called his name when he was alone in the office. One of my ex-colleagues even saw “it” sitting on the chair near the door, he was so scared to passby it, so he trapped in the office until morning. He is one of the “lucky” one who owns third eye.

Fortunately, I didn’t have any encounter like that again. I did see or sense something weird from time to time, but I just attributed it as my eyesight problem and discussed it. I slept in more than 10 hotels, when I was travelling around to take photos for MySabah.com. Quite amazing that I “survived.” I usually leave the light on, while sleeping in hotels. But there were a few times that the room upstair was very noisy, like somebody moved the furniture and wild kids running, BETWEEN 2AM and 4AM. I only told myself not to think too much, “It is not good brother… It is not good brother…”

Hope you are not reading this blog at night. If I have time, I will tell your more stories that I heard from others. More scary… I will only share the one that told by the “victims” themselves to me directly, as a real story will turn into another version totally different, after it has been passed on by a few mouths.

My New Wife

After saying I want it, I want it for years, finally I got my first DSLR! This babe costs me over RM3K, burning a big hole in my pocket, but it also opens a new hole to better photography. The moment it became mine, my heart was beating so fast that like I have became a father, so exciting. It is solid and heavier than my old wives (other camera). It is a 10 Megalpixel camera. To me, Megapixel is like susu, the Bigger, the Better. But I have many other reasons to go for a SLR. If you are interested, you can read my love stories below to see how I changed my mindset.

1st Wife: Olympus CAMEDIA C-860L

She only supported up to 1 MP (Megalpixel). I married her in year 2001 (cost RM800, 2nd-hand price). The photo printout only looks ok in 3R size. She is very slow and looked like a brick. The picture took 5 seconds to load in LCD playback preview. Everyone laughed at me when they saw her, so I decided to dump her. Later I would fly her on a kite to experiment aerial photography. At least she can die with glory. I am not kidding.

2nd Wife: Sony Cybershot DSC-S40

After 4 years, in year 2005, I found my second wife in a promotion in Centre Point Sabah. I took a long time to switch to 2nd camera coz I was totally not interested in photography that time. The main reason I bought it was because I planned to travel the “whole” Sabah, so I needed it to record my trip. This little RM699 camera changed my life. My interest grew when she helped me to win 5 photography contest. Then I started to share my photos online, the start of MySabah.com. Very soon I found that she could not satisfy me anymore bcoz of her limitation. For example, her 4.1MP photos also didn’t look good on A4 (8R) size printout. The WORST thing was – she didn’t have any image stabilizer, making most of my photos blur, extremely annoying and depressing to see this after whole day of hardwork. Her focusing started to shock shock liao, after taking over 30,000 photos.

3rd Wife: Sony Cybershot DSC-H1

Photography has became part of my life. Being an ignorant beginner, I thought photos taken by low-end camera can match SLR quality (coz I won a few competition). Due to limited budget, I decided to go for prosumer camera in 2006. The RM1,800 Sony Cybershot DSC-H1 attracted me coz it was one of the first camera with built-in 12x optical zoom, very useful for me to take photos of stage show from far away. Another reason was – I already stucked with Sony Memory Sticks. Disappointedly, this camera only helped me to win 1 consolation prize. It could fulfill my needs most of the time. But I could not stand that her excessive noise appeared in photo taken with ISO400. She is also very slow in focusing and flash recharge (6 seconds waiting time), causing a big frustration in photo-shooting beauty pageant and model show. I got serious with photography and studied more about it. At last I realised that I needed a SLR for better photo quality and performance. However, if coupled with a close-up len, DSC-H1 does a marvelous job in photography small objects. Its outcome can even beat SLR that with only basic kit. So I will spare her life. I estimated she has taken over 50,000 photos. She is on MC now.

4th Wife: Canon EOS 400D

My true love, purchased on July 21. At first I worried that it would be too advance, coz SLR needs you to make more decision. But I find its interface very user-friendly and easy to operate. All the important setting such as ISO, Exposure, WB, metering, AF point, etc. can be accessed quickly, and loads of other features. It is also OK to know nothing, just use the auto-mode and it will choose the right setting for you most of the time. Its speed and performance are many times better than all my old camera, which are more like toys. 3 photos per second normally and 1 photo per second with flash. The shutter sound of SLR is the greatest music of the world. I regret I didn’t buy it earlier. The only complaint is I have to use viewfinder to take photo coz it has no preview screen. Its metering doesn’t work very well for subject with backlight.

Just to list one of the things I like. In the past, there were a few friends who requested me to take their wedding photos. I didn’t dare to take the job coz I knew my old “half-blind” camera would produce something like above at the left. See the problem? The front is clear, but behind is all dark, due to the ISO400 limit. With such outcome, the wedding photos would look like funeral. The picture at the right, taken by D400 under same light condition, looks closer to what our eyes see, coz of better light sensitivity. Well, now is still our “honey moon” period, everything seems good. Hopefully no more issue later.

KK Bloggers Gathering

Hello! Long time no see. You would think that I was death. I am doing ok. Just busy on my new job, quite stressed… So here you go, the photos of FIRST KK Bloggers Gathering at Pirates of Borneo, Jesselton Point, Kota Kinabalu, on July 6. I am glad to be part of this great happening. There were about 50 bloggers coming. Very good response. And thanks to organisers, Gallivanter and Jacq for the wonderful free BBQ buffet, lucky draw and cruise. You have done an excellent job. I am looking forward to the second gathering. We should make it a “Sabah” bloggers gathering next time, not just KK.

Since many bloggers have blogged about this event, I would not repeat saying the same thing. When I arrived the gathering spot that evening, a few bloggers were already there. Actually we all agreed that we had strange feeling about it at first. Coz we have the common interest (blogging loh), very soon we started to enjoy ourselves. As you know, I am low profile and “hide” my identity in the past. I have to say that I am really happy to know you all.

This time I didn’t take many photos. My “wife” was on MC (Sony Cybershot DSC-H1), and I knew my spare Sony Cybershot DSC-S40 would did very terrible job in taking pictures at night. But how can I miss this “historical moment.” I brought it anyway, just to take a few snapshots. Seemed like every blogger also brought a camera with them. Haha, another common thing among bloggers.

Photo (from left to right): Zie, Julian, Jefferi C, Kupi, Ned, Lionel, and Jimmy

If I got your photo, I will send to you later. Be patient ah. BTW, anyone can send me the group photo? Thank you first. I had to work on the following day (Saturday!). Otherwise I would want to join Gallivanter for the white water rafting… I had a good time with the dinner, evening cruise and gathering. The only thing I want to complain is I didn’t win any lucky draw!

Photo (from left to right): Jacq, Daniel (Gallivanter), and Jewelle

OKlah, back to work (blogging lah) now. The unpublished photos and blog like shit pile up in my intestines. It is a pain not to “release” them. Really busy with my job (daytime one) nowadays. But like my friend LHS said, Time is like Nine Nine, You got it if you Squeeze it. Now is 2AM, very hungry oh…

Tun Fuad Stephens Park (Bukit Padang), Kota Kinabalu

Tun Fuad Stephens Park (Bukit Padang) is closed for two years (10 Dec 2022 to 18 Sep 2024) for an upgrade to Tun Fuad Stephens Botanical Garden.

Facts Sheet of Tun Fuad Stephens Botanical Garden project by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK)

Summary of the Upgrade Project:

  • The lake will be maintained and added with other facilities such as floating platforms, tracks around the lake, lighting
  • New gardens such as Ginger Garden, Orchid and Nepenthes Conservatory, Nadir Park, Herb Garden, Bamboo Corner and Botany Playpark.
  • Forest restoration by planting local trees
  • Upgrading and increasing the amount of parking, build an e-hailing vehicle stop
  • Upgrade of the main gate (main entry board, guard house, plaza and kiosk)
  • Other New Facilities / Upgrades: overwater platform, administrative, research and maintenance offices, nursery building, public toilet, existing jogging track, lights, stairs, park chairs, CCTV

Tun Fuad is the most popular jogging site in Kota Kinabalu city. During weekend and Sunday, there are so many joggers that very likely you would see your friend or familiar faces. Personally, I think Tun Fuad is far more better than Likas Sport Complex. If compared, the jogging trail of Likas Sport Complex is about 0.6 KM (correct me if I am wrong) and the path is flat. The jogging path at Tun Fuad is nearly 1 KM, with many up and down trails. And Tun Fuad has more nice-figured liang moi (pretty girls), heheh… Ok, seriously, below are the features that make me like it.

Feature 1. Superb KK City View

Besides the jogging trail, there are some hiking trails that lead you to the top of the hill. Normally, it took me about half an hour to walk up there. The last part is the “tyre” trail (should be renamed as “tired trail”) that I fear the most, extremely tiring… But soon you will forget all the pain, when you are washed by the windy fresh air and see the view of KK city under you. You can see most of the KK landmark building from here.

Feature 2. Jogging + Hiking

BTW, if you would like to experience how it feels to climb Mount Kinabalu, just walk up and down the hill non-stop for 6 hours. This place was once my training ground before the summit trip. Jogging is a monotonous and boring exercise to me, so a 2-in-1 activity (jogging + hiking) works well for me. Tun Fuad Park is surrounded by forest, so the air is fresher and you can spot small wild animals and insects on the way. At the end, I think jogging + hiking is not enough, so I bring my camera along for photo-shooting.

Tun Fuad Park gets more fern plant and spiders than any other places in KK. There are so many types of spiders, so I am not surprised if you find a new species there. Most of them are very small. Next time I will try to get a macro len for photographing smaller insects. See the “jade” spider below? It is like a jewellery. You can give it to your grandma as a birthday present, if you have no money to buy precious stone. Here you also can find one of the biggest ant in the world (see picture below). In the evening, these forest ants are everywhere on the forest floor of Tun Fuad park. Be careful while exploring area outside the trail, wasps are common, and they love to build nest under the leaf. Sometimes you can see snake but it is not common.

Feature 3. Magnificent Sunset View

Tanjung Aru Beach is NOT the best spot to view sunset. To truly appreciate the beauty of sunset, the hill top of Tun Fuad Park won’t disappoint you, but you need some luck. I shoot the “Sea of Cloud” photo below in a cloudy day. Haha… in case you wonder how the photo was taken, just turn the picture below upside down, or look at the original photo here. Both look equally good. You can see more Tun Fuad sunset photos here.

The road will be very dark after the sunset. Do bring a torch light with you, if you plan to stay longer on the hill.

Blood Donation

I got a SMS from a friend who needed blood donor urgently, for the surgery of his family member. Ok lah, my cholesterol level was high so that’s a good way to decrease its level by giving it to someone else. Just kidding. In fact, I consider my blood as high grade coz I don’t smoke, beer beer, and eat oily food. To make sure my blood was full of energy and nutrition, I ate until I nearly puked, before the donation. Who knows it might help the receiver. If he informed me earlier, I would eat bird nest, ginseng, abalone, lingzhi etc. Of course I will send him the bill.

Even though I have donated blood more than 4 times, every time my feeling is still like a first timer and I will never enjoy it. No… it is not painful. The whole process is like a mosquito bite. I also didn’t dare to look at my finger and arm when they took my blood (so coward!). Hopefully my hot blood will turn the receiver into a blogger like me, to make my suffering worthy.

1. Fill up form
The first step is to answer some questions to check if you are a potential carrier of AIDS, STD, Hepatitis and other sickness. My only sex partner is Miss 5, so I shall be safe. My English is poor so I asked the nurse what is Fits / Sawan. She also didn’t know how to explain it in English, so she tried to show me the symptom. She is such a great actor…

2. Body Check
A nurse checked my blood pressure and it appeared to be normal. You need to be heavier than 45kg to qualify. Even the blind can see that I am fat (63kg), so no need weighting lah. I remember many years ago, I was so embarrassed coz they rejected to take my blood. That time I was less than 45kg. So malu… She also asked my blood group. “I am B positive,” I answered. She said, “Are you sure?” I guess she may have watched the Korean movie “My Boyfriend is Type B”, so she couldn’t believe the nice and handsome guy in front of her is type B. I haven’t watched that movie yet. From what I heard, it pictured Type B guy as a jerk, and this caused the “market value” of Type B men dropped badly.

3. Hemoglobin Test
She took a drop of blood from my finger. “Your blood flows so fast. You just had your lunch?” She quickly used cotton to wipe away the excess blood. Heheh… no lah, more than one hour already, probably the lunch was too heavy that all my blood cells are taking a walk now. My blood droplet sinked like a rock, to the bottom of chemical liquid below, passed. If the blood floats on top or in middle, that means the iron in your blood is low.

4. Donating Blood
Finally, the slaughter moment. The artery of my left arm is too small, so they have to take it from my right arm. Another reason I dislike donation coz it will make my right arm sour. The nurse injected pain killer first, so I didn’t even feel that he has inserted the tube (didn’t dare to look). Within 15 minutes, my 450ml blood bag was full. Happily I snapped a picture. They advised me to rest on the bed for a while, so I wouldn’t pass out.

I heard that someone was awarded the Datuk title coz he had been donating blood for over 20 years. Now I am one step closer to be a Datuk. Show respect to Smoke Head, OK. You think this is funny? If blood donation is not an ACHIEVEMENT, then why some of you send in your Blood Donation Certificate with your resume, in your job application? Sometimes I even got job applicants who submitted their Certificate of Conquering Mount Kinabalu.

My most unforgettable blood donation experience is the campaign in Centre Point Sabah. There were so many donors and beds. During the donation, they simply put my blood bag on the floor. And there were many people busy walking around my bed. I could not imagine what would happen if they accidentally stepped on my blood bag and the blood flew backward (vomit blood?). So far, I never experienced any bad side-effect after blood donation. The only problem is – you will become so sleepy and hungry that you can’t decide to eat first, or to sleep first, my eyelids are so heavy now… bye.., b.y..e…. Zzzz…. (Well, my body has made the choice)

My First Xmas Gift

Finally I kena saman. I have been driving for over 10 years and never got fined. It was my fault so I can’t blame anyone. From the recent newspaper, you would read that police and DBKK are very hardworking in giving out Christmas present, SAMAN. I am one of the lucky ones. Christmas is approaching so the traffic jam is getting worse, and it is very hard to find a parking space.

I parked my car at the wrong place at the wrong day. It was used to be very “safe” area. I knew I was screwed, when I saw the police motorbikes near to my car. The traffic policemen were still busy writing tickets for other cars next to mine (damn… I would escape if I came 5 minutes earlier…). I walked to him to asked how much I got fined. “RM70!” I felt my legs lost a bit of strength. Then I asked nicely if I could got fined less. Fortunately I met a nice one. He changed the offense item to minor one, which will cost me RM30. I moved away my car immediately, and prayed that he didn’t see my malfunction rear light…

The first time I went to the police station to pay the fine, they said the line was down (huh?!) and they couldn’t process it manually. So I came back the next day. The queue was not long but it was frustrating that every driver asked for a discount or dispute at the counter, each taking 5 to 10 minutes. When I paid my ticket, I also checked out the fine of other traffic offences (please note that the amount is subject to vary. Sometimes they even have “promotion” prices), FYI:

Offence Fine
Failing to park parallel to road side RM30
Parking on the wrong side of road RM30
Parking in contravention of a traffic sign RM70
Causing unnecessary obstruction of traffic RM70
Parking within 30 feet of corner RM70
Parking within 30 feet of bus stop sign RM70
Parking within 10 feet of fire hydrant stand pipe RM70
Parking too far from side of road RM70
Parking opposite double white lines RM70
Failing to exhibit front/rear/number plate lights RM100+
Failing to exhibit road tax license or unlicensed vehicle RM100+
Colour of paintwork changed RM100+
Using tyre without sufficient tread RM100+
Incorrect, indistinct or obscured number plate RM100+

You may check out the promotion prices below. Such a DEEP DISCOUNT!!! No wonder nobody wants to pay the fine on time.
