KK City After Work

I took the picture below last year. It was about 6:20 PM and everyone was heading home. I was already waiting on the new sky bridge since 5:30 PM, busy snapping photos of cars passing the road between Karamunsing Complex and Wisma Tun Fuad. The sunset and city are so beautiful…

🙁 This photo is a “half-baked” work coz I didn’t use longer exposure time to get a “golden river” effect from car light. Hehe… lazy to carry tripod (regret).. Later I tried to come back but the weather turned bad until now. The bridge also closed for construction last time (I even sneaked inside twice). Sad lah, now they are building the flyover in the middle, blocking the view. This scene will become a history soon.

The Beauty and Lifestyle of KK City

DBKK organised a photography competition named “The Beauty and Lifestyle of KK City” last year and I submitted a few of my photos to join. The photo exhibition and prize presentation were held on Feb 2 (KK City Day) in Palm Square, Centre Point Sabah. I won a consolation prize that came with a trophy, certificate and a small Ang Pow. FYI, the award structure is like this; Gold Medal x 1, Silver Medal x 2, Bronze Medal x 2, Consolation x 10.

Actually I was a bit surprised that the photo, which I least expected to win, won a consolation prize. I didn’t highly expect I would win anything coz I am not a professional photographer. Luck was a big helper to me. In fact, I also feel a bit “shy” seeing my photos being exhibited together with others’ professional artworks. Hehe… lack of self-confidence but still happy lah anyway. I will improve my skill and join again this year.

During the exhibition, I was introduced to some of the famous local photographers. They are very friendly and all the contestants seem like already knowing one another very well. Probably that’s why they were curious to find out “Who is this new guy?” They do a lot of photography outing in Sabah. When they talked about taking pictures, their eyes were sparkling.

Before I started to love photography last year, I was an amateur graphic and web designer so photo-shooting naturally became a nice complement to my hobby. I also find that many art design concepts also can apply to photography. Maybe both are art. Scientists say the born left-hander is usually a born artist or someone more creative. According to mom, I was a left-hander, then she whacked and forced me to become a right-hander when I was 5. Fortunately, that did not bury my creativity, haha… yeah I am right..

On Top of Tun Fuad Hill

Today is New Year Eve. You might think that Smoke Head would go celebrate in a big party today. You are wrong. This year is the 1st anniversary of the Tsunami disaster 2004, so seem like everyone wants to keep the Xmas and New Year celebration low key. All hotels come up EXPENSIVE New Year Eve dinner package. Frankly speaking, I think food would not taste better coz of New Year Eve, so no point I pay extra for it.

This morning I went to Tun Fuad Park and walked up to the top of the hill. Why I was going there? This morning I saw a lot of dense cloud floated across lowly on top of KK, so I wanted to see if I could get a nice shot from the top of the hill.

On the way up to the hill, Tun Fuad Park also got some small animals and bugs that can be interesting photography subjects. I remember I saw 1 inch big ants there 2 years ago. I returned to Tun Fuad Park a few times and could not find them again. It is quite hard to take macro shot, as the bugs would run like hell when they see me. Some even bite me.

Fiddler Crabs, Again?

Remember I mentioned that I wrote an article about fiddler crabs and mangrove forest? My article and photos are posted on the newspaper today. Feel happy but a bit disappointed though. I sent them 30 photos but they only used a few, so it could not really show how colorful are the fiddler crabs. It was quite a pain to write the article in Chinese, as I have forgotten so many words. I also found it very tired to do hand-writing.. Too bad I could not make a living writing stuffs like this for newspaper.

Today I am lazy to blog. So I prepare an incomplete comic for a sequence of funny pictures below, for you to fill in the blank. Let’s see how creative are my readers. 🙂 Have fun.

Close-up with Borneo Fiddler Crabs

I have tried out the close-up len with my Sony Cybershot DSC-H1. It is like a dream comes true. Now I am able to take very close picture of tiny fiddler crab. Below is the picture of my favorite fiddler crab. See the three dots on its back? Look like a face, isn’t it? So cute.. I also have taken many photos of other fiddler crabs. They got red, yellow, orange, blue, green, black, white, brown and purple colors. I have written an article about fiddler crabs of mangrove forest and will send it to the local newspaper tomorrow (hope they will post it). I would like the public to see the beauty of these crabs and know the importance of protecting our mangrove forest, the home of these beautiful creatures.
