But there&#8217;s a mysterious but beautiful garden down below, a world which has no human settlement. Sabah is lucky as\u00a0part of <a href=\"http:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/what_we_do\/where_we_work\/coraltriangle\/\">Coral Triangle<\/a> (a.k.a. Amazon of the Sea) thriving with over 600 coral and 2,000 reef fish species. The Aquarium &amp; Marine Museum of University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) lets us explore\u00a0our ocean world without getting our hair wet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_1.jpg\" alt=\"Aquarium &amp; Marine Museum of University Malaysia Sabah (UMS)\" \/><br \/>\nPic: the building of UMS&#8217;s Aquarium &amp; Marine Museum. The signage is in Malay language (translated as <em>Welcome to Aquarium &amp; Marine Museum, Borneo Marine Research Institute<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Managed by Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI), Aquarium &amp; Marine Museum is a 2-in-1 showcase where visitors can see interesting specimens in their museum, and the live ones in aquarium. It&#8217;s not big and it takes ordinary tourists less than an hour to tour around and leave with some pictures, or\u00a0it can take hours if you come with an intention to learn and leave with more knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_2.jpg\" alt=\"Sipadan deep dive diorama\" \/><br \/>\nWhen you walk in, just look up and you will see the diorama of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/?p=3505\">Sipadan Island<\/a> deep dive. That reminds me of my previous wall diving trip in Sipadan. It&#8217;s a tranquil environment full of vibrant marine lives.<\/p>\n<h3>Marine Museum<\/h3>\n<p>This museum exhibits and documents some of the extraordinary specimens and flora\u00a0&amp;\u00a0fauna records of Borneo ocean. The goal is to educate the public to protect our marine environment so museum won&#8217;t become the only place to see them. Most of the labels, posters and news clips are in English and Malay languages.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_3.jpg\" alt=\"skeleton of Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris)\" \/><br \/>\nPic: skeleton of Cuvier&#8217;s Beaked Whale (<em>Ziphius cavirostris<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>The highlight is the 4.43-Meter skeleton of Cuvier&#8217;s Beaked Whale, it&#8217;s the first record of this whale appears in Malaysia (Sabah). You also can see the preserved remains of Rough-toothed dolphin (<em>Steno bredanensis<\/em>) and 4 species of turtles from Sabah. FYI, there are 15 marine mammal species (dolphin, whale, dugong) live in the sea of Sabah and Sarawak. Do you know Irrawaddy Dolphin was used to be common in Sabah rivers?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_4.jpg\" alt=\"hard corals and seashells exhibition\" \/><br \/>\nPic: hard corals and seashells exhibition<\/p>\n<p>There are many beautiful seashells displayed here. Our beaches are no longer carpeted by seashells nowadays because of beach-combing by tourists and locals, and many end up in handicraft shops and seafood restaurants too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_17.jpg\" alt=\"Durian Ray (Urogymnus asperrimus)\" \/><br \/>\nPic: Porcupine Ray (<em>Urogymnus asperrimus<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>One of the rare specimens is the <strong>Porcupine Ray<\/strong>, locally known as <em>Durian Ray<\/em>, which is<strong> the only &#8220;sting-less&#8221; stingray that uses heavily spiked skin as defense mechanism<\/strong>. It is first found in Sabah at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/?p=222\">Banggi Island<\/a>. It attracted a lot of spectators in the fish market then the researchers moved it here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_5.jpg\" alt=\"hard corals exhibition\" \/><br \/>\nPic: hard corals on display<\/p>\n<p>The rich variety of hard corals in this gallery are mainly from Semporna and Lahad Datu. Most of them are collected from 6-week <strong>Galaxea Expedition 98<\/strong> in Darvel Bay of Lahad Datu, where they identified <strong>1 new genus and 8 new species of corals in the world<\/strong> (and over 100 new records in Sabah)! The 8 newly discovered coral species are on display here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_6.jpg\" alt=\"hard corals from Lahad Datu and Semporna\" \/><br \/>\nMany medicines\u00a0are developed from coral reef animals and plants and 1\/4 of our catch are from coral reefs, so destroying corals is same as destroying\u00a0the home of seafood\u00a0and our hope to cure cancer, arthritis, etc.<\/p>\n<h3>Aquarium<\/h3>\n<p>Visitors can see big and small marine lives up-close in 2 huge aquariums and couples of fish tanks and tube tanks. Is Nemo the only fish your children know? This aquarium is a fun &#8220;classroom&#8221; to show them what are squirrel fish, parrot fish, angel fish, surgeon fish, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_7.jpg\" alt=\"oval fish tank\" \/><br \/>\nPic: oval fish tank filled with\u00a0regal blue tang, clown fish, feather star, starfish, sea cucumber, banner fish, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_8.jpg\" alt=\"Banded Cleaner Shrimp and sea anemone\" \/><br \/>\nPic: Banded cleaner shrimp and sea anemone<\/p>\n<p>Cleaner shrimps help to remove parasites from fishes for free and fishes won&#8217;t eat them. For fun, some scuba divers open their mouths to let cleaner shrimp to get in\u00a0cleaning their teeth. This is just one of the wonders in ocean life.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_9.jpg\" alt=\"big fish tanks with fishes and corals\" \/><br \/>\nIn 3 hours, I saw many\u00a0tourists from Hong Kong, China and Australia in\u00a0the aquarium. Their mouths opened wide when their tour guide told them that <strong>corals are animals, not plant<\/strong>. Besides fishes, you can see hard and soft corals in the tanks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_10.jpg\" alt=\"juvenile sea turtle in fish tank\" \/><br \/>\nPic: A 16-month old Green Turtle adopted from turtle hatchery at Borneo Divers and Seasports Mabul, Semporna.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_11.jpg\" alt=\"aquarium of UMS\" \/><br \/>\nMany kids were excited by the exhibition and fish tanks. Their curiosity peaked and kept asking questions, and their parents busy answering patiently (by peeking at the labels), what a great place to play and learn for family.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_12.jpg\" alt=\"huge fish tank\" \/><br \/>\nThis <strong>deep reef tank<\/strong> holds 11,000 Liters of seawater and houses high value commercial species such as groupers, seabass and snapper.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_13.jpg\" alt=\"visitors in UMS Aquarium\" \/><br \/>\nThe feeding time is between 3:30pm and 4pm, the best time to see all the fishes\u00a0come out of their hiding place for food.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_14.jpg\" alt=\"tube tank with Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)\" \/><br \/>\nThe tube tanks, which house Humphead Wrasse, Napoleon Wrasse and Nile Tilapia, look like incubator capsule of space lab in science fiction movies.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_15.jpg\" alt=\"Chocolate Chip Star (Protoeaster nodosus)\" \/><br \/>\nPic: a <strong>Chocolate Chip Star<\/strong> (yes, it&#8217;s really named like that), keen to give it a lick? LOL<\/p>\n<p>Starfish has amazing regenerating ability. It&#8217;s able to re-grow arms that are lost. The broken arms may also regenerate to another complete starfish!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_16.jpg\" alt=\"clownfish and giant clams\" \/><br \/>\nPic: Nemo and giant clams<\/p>\n<p>Clownfish (Nemo) can change sex from female to male, a characteristic known as <em>Protandrous Hermaphroditism<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/?p=543\">Sabah has 7 out of 9 giant clam species in the world<\/a>, due to over-fishing, it&#8217;s hard to see one in the wild.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_18.jpg\" alt=\"Giant Freshwater Prawn (Udang Galah) (macrobrachium rosenbergii)\" \/><br \/>\nPic: UMS also conducts research on farming of Giant Freshwater Prawn (<em>Udang Galah<\/em>) for commercial purpose.<\/p>\n<h3>Giant Groupers<\/h3>\n<p>Guess which fish attracts the most attention? It&#8217;s not Nemo but the hybrid grouper, which is\u00a0a\u00a0cross between tiger grouper (<em>Epiphelus fuscoguttatus<\/em>) and giant grouper (<em>Epinephelus lanceolatus<\/em>), the <strong>first hybrid grouper (named as <em>TGG hybrid<\/em>) in the world<\/strong>. This is one of the BMRI projects to improve high-market-value grouper species in fish farm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_19.jpg\" alt=\"tourists taking photos of hybrid groupers\" \/><br \/>\nMany tourists lined up to take photo with them. These two big groupers are very cooperative and &#8220;friendly&#8221;, as if they enjoy being photographed. Since they are hybrid, you won&#8217;t find this fish in the wild. Well, groupers not only look good on plate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_36.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_36-425x283.jpg\" alt=\"Giant Grouper\" width=\"425\" height=\"283\" class=\"alignnone size-width450 wp-image-6374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_36-425x283.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_36-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_36-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_36-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_36.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The true superstar in this aquarium is a 15-year-old Giant Grouper<\/strong> (<em>Epinephelus lanceolatus<\/em>), which weighs 60-70 Kg and about 4 feet\u00a0long. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_37.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_37-425x283.jpg\" alt=\"Giant Grouper\" width=\"425\" height=\"283\" class=\"alignnone size-width450 wp-image-6375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_37-425x283.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_37-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_37-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_37-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150118_37.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThere are also Tiger groupers, Orange-spotted groupers and Seabass in another tank.<\/p>\n<p>Other hybrids that were successfully produced are, Orange-spotted grouper x Giant grouper (<em>E. coioides<\/em> x <em>E. fuscoguttatus<\/em>) and Mouse grouper x Tiger grouper (<em>Cromileptes altevelis<\/em> x <em>E. fuscoguttatus<\/em>).<\/p>\n<h3>Other Things to Do<\/h3>\n<p>Visitors can do other fun activities in the aquarium.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_22.jpg\" alt=\"photo stand ins in Ocean Outreach Corner\" \/><br \/>\nPic: taking photo in stand ins in <strong>Ocean Outreach Corner<\/strong>. The 110 Sq. Meter Ocean Outreach Corner is a small room suitable for group activity. There are some informative posters about fishery and conservation such as fishing gears of Malaysia, commercial rays, aquaculture, hatchery projects, sea turtle research and academic marine programs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_23.jpg\" alt=\"mini theatre in the Aquarium\" \/><br \/>\nPic: Mini Theater in the Aquarium<\/p>\n<p>You can watch video about marine biodiversity of Sabah in this 50-seat mini theatre equipped with audio-visual facilities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_24.jpg\" alt=\"mangrove walk\" \/><br \/>\nPic: mangrove walk<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a mangrove walk section at the exit of aquarium, with some dense mangrove plant (<em>Rhizophora spp.<\/em>) in a muddy pond. Though mangrove is a swamp, it&#8217;s vital for marine life because over 70 fish species such as grouper use mangrove as a feeding, breeding and nursery area.<\/p>\n<h3>Sea View &amp; UMS Jetty<\/h3>\n<p>I noticed a few tour buses didn&#8217;t leave the university after the visit, they brought their tourists to another side, so I followed them and found a nice beach.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_25.jpg\" alt=\"Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) Complex\" \/><br \/>\nPic: the aquarium is situated next to a scenic seaside (see left).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2015\/20150118_26.jpg\" alt=\"road to UMS jetty\" \/><br \/>\nPic: you can follow this road to walk 300 Meters to the beach. It is open to public and you can walk-in during opening hours without prior arrangement. Though it&#8217;s not a world-class oceanarium, the aquarium can give you a good overview of ocean biodiversity in Borneo.
