Popcorn? Corn Soup?&#8230; I believe you have your own favorite way to enjoy it. In Sabah, usually we boil the whole cob until it is cooked. Sometimes we like it to be grilled, which we call <em>Jagung Bakar<\/em> (Grilled Corn) and it can be found readily in the fruit &amp; veges roadside stalls along the road near Kota Marudu and Kudat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_1.jpg\" alt=\"roadside stall\"\/><br \/>\nIf you drive around our countryside, you would be enticed to pull over to visit the roadside stalls of villagers, especially after a long trip. The smoke always attracts people to check out the grilled corn.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_2.jpg\" alt=\"fruit and vegetables for sale at roadside\"\/><br \/>\nI&#8217;ve marked the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps?q=6.530234,116.690201&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=6.50124,116.703129&amp;spn=0.15299,0.264187&amp;sll=6.530117,116.6874&amp;sspn=0.611922,1.056747&amp;t=h&amp;z=13\">location of this roadside stall in Google map<\/a>. Anyway, there are many other stalls like this along the road to Kudat (north of Sabah).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_4.jpg\" alt=\"hanging grilled corn\"\/><br \/>\nPic: the hanging Jagung Bakar. At first look, it is hard to associate burnt stuff with the word &#8220;delicious&#8221;. People who had tried this will drool.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_5.jpg\" alt=\"bbq corn\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_6.jpg\" alt=\"grilled corn\"\/><br \/>\nPic: Grilled Corn in the making..<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_7.jpg\" alt=\"close up of grilled corn\"\/><br \/>\nIt is only <strong>RM5 (\u2248USD1.50) for 4 grilled corn<\/strong>. The corn is quite big with fat kernels. They say this corn species is from Taiwan and widely planted locally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_8.jpg\" alt=\"eating grilled corn\"\/><br \/>\nThe corn was barbecued, so I thought it would taste hard and dry. Surprisingly, the kernel is <strong>soft, sweet and juicy<\/strong>, with nice aroma of charcoal. Be careful if you want your kids to try the corn, it can be quite hot. If any soot gets on your cloth, just blow it away. Don&#8217;t try to pick it, because this would break it and leave a black stain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_3.jpg\" alt=\"fruit and vegetables stall\"\/><br \/>\nLocals, as well as tourists, love to buy these fresh fruits and vegetables straight from the farm and orchard of villages. The price of farm produces would double if they are sold in city (and not really fresh). The best thing is you can bargain with the farmers, something we can&#8217;t do in supermarket.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_9.jpg\" alt=\"fruits for sale\"\/><br \/>\nEven if I&#8217;m not a buyer, browsing the colorful produces is fun.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_10.jpg\" alt=\"tarap fruit\"\/><br \/>\nPic: foreigner may not familiar with the fruit above. It is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/?p=2895\">tarap<\/a>, only available in certain months. It&#8217;s a must try.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_11.jpg\" alt=\"rambutan\"\/><br \/>\nPic: rambutan fruit<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_12.jpg\" alt=\"langsat\"\/><br \/>\nPic: langsat, another locals&#8217; favorite fruit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_13.jpg\" alt=\"honey\"\/><br \/>\nPic: honey for sale. Many farmers in Kudat and Kota Marudu also have bee farm, so this is commonly sold around this area. Some West Malaysians buy many bottles of this and they say our honey has medicinal property that is good for health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/2005_corn-fest\/beauty\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140315_14.jpg\" alt=\"Maize Fashion Queen\"\/><\/a><br \/>\nCorn is such an important crop in northern Sabah that the district government organizes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/?p=79\">Maize Festival<\/a> in Kota Marudu annually.
