{"id":4028,"date":"2014-01-29T23:45:57","date_gmt":"2014-01-29T15:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/?p=4028"},"modified":"2014-01-29T23:51:23","modified_gmt":"2014-01-29T15:51:23","slug":"lion-dragon-unicorn-and-horse-dances-of-sabah-malaysia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/wordpress\/lion-dragon-unicorn-and-horse-dances-of-sabah-malaysia\/","title":{"rendered":"Lion, Dragon, Unicorn and &#8220;Horse&#8221; Dances of Sabah, Malaysia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese New Year is around the corner and we start to see more and more lion dance in the city. <strong>The best time to see lion dance in Sabah is in annual Lion, Dragon and Unicorn Dance Festival<\/strong>, where you can see over 50 lion dance groups from local Chinese NGOs, temples and companies. This festival is usually held about one week (or earlier) before Chinese New Year. Below are some photos and videos that I shot during the event.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mysabah\/12203794524\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140129_1.jpg\" alt=\"lion heads in different colors\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nPic: lions in different colors. Which one is your favorite?<\/p>\n<p>In lion dance tradition, the colors of lion was used to have some meaning such as the hero it represents and its personality. For example, the colors below represent the legendary hero and generals in &#8220;Three Kingdoms&#8221; of China history:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Yellow:<\/strong> <em>Propitious Lion<\/em> (\u745e\u7345) &#8211; represents virtue, prosperity and benevolence, a gentle lion<\/li>\n<li><strong>Red:<\/strong> <em>Awakening Lion<\/em> (\u9192\u7345) &#8211; represents talent, faithfulness and justice, a smart and confident lion<\/li>\n<li><strong>Black:<\/strong> <em>Warrior Lion<\/em> (\u731b\u7345) &#8211; represents loyalty, courage and strength, a strong but bad-tempered lion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140129_12.jpg\" alt=\"lion heads in 3 colors\" \/><br \/>\nHowever, I guess this color codes are no longer being strictly followed today. Now we can even see lion in pink color and the lions are getting more furry and cuter than before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mysabah\/12201591953\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mysabah.com\/images\/2014\/20140129_2.jpg\" alt=\"lions and three princes\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nChinese New Year is a festive season for Chinese. Chinese likes to show their happiness by being noisy. It went viral and got nearly 1 million views. The dragon dance group used it to perform before, must be very heavy..<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EUWVk92WMwA?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nVideo: most lions we see in Malaysia are Southern Lions mainly from GuangDong.
