Tamu Besar, Kota Belud, Sabah

The traditional costumes of Bajau women are very distinctive among the indigenous people. Usually yellow and red are the primary colors. So another highlight of the Tamu Besar is the Ratu Serimpak (Serimpak Beauty Queen Contest). Serimpak is an ornate headpiece worn by Bajau and Iranun women. The dangling attachment to the Serimpak is known as Garigai (See picture at the left). Click here to look at the Serimpak very closely. The contest rule is very simple. There is no oral challenge. All the contestants walked slowly on the stage, trying to show their costumes in different graceful gestures. Whoever got the most beautiful display and prettiest face will win.
